This home was inspired by the shingle style homes along the coast of New England only reinterpreted through the vernacular lens of the lowcountry. The site has dramatic western views across the Colleton River which presented the challenge of opening up the home to those marsh views while at the same time protecting it from the harsh western exposure.
The dominant architectural element is the two-story double gable with dramatic curved roof forms swooping down over the perimeter spaces of the first floor. The swoop is mirrored about a cloister space and employed in reverse on the carriage house.
The interior of the home features a dramatic two-story cathedraled entry and great room defined by a bridge on the second floor that visually separates the two spaces. Views of Spring Island and the Colleton River are framed though large french doors at the back end of this space. The real beauty of this home is how harmoniously its complex elements work together.
